Network Printers

General Information

On level 2, there are two student printers called "hp2-1", which holds 3000 sheets of paper and "hp2-2", which holds 1500 sheets of paper. These printers are exclusively for Department of Computing students to use (i.e. you have to have a computing account to use it).

The Department of Computing provides paper and toner.

Printing facilities are a privilege not a right - abusing these privilege will see the printer removed permanently.

You should use the School printer for printing out your assignments, source code, practical work, etc. It's not for anything else. Students caught printing out material which is non-School/University based and/or breaches School/University policy will be dealt with accordingly.

TIP: You may wish to include your Computing Account username somewhere on your printouts - to avoid confusion about who's print job belongs to who.

How to Print:

Printing from Linux machines:

  1. Check the printer queue first: lpq -Php2-1 or lpq -Php2-2
  2. Print the document to hp2: lpr -Php2-1 (or -Php2-2) <filename.txt>
  3. Remove the print job from hp2: lprm -Php2-1 (or -Php2-2) <print job number>

You should see your tutor or the Duty Programmer for further printing assistance or even read the Unix man pages for lpr, lpq and lprm.

Printing PDF's:

Please use Adobe Acrobat reader to printout PDF's. The "xpdf" and "evince" programs tend to not print out PDF's properly.

Collecting your print outs:

Please collect your print-outs from the printer (Level 2).
Please collect your print-outs promptly after printing them.
