What do I need to run this?
A web browser such as Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer that implements Java 1.0 or greater is required. The software has been tested with Netscape Communicator 4.5.1 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.5, but will most likely work with earlier versions, provided they support Java 1.0 or greater.
Do I need Java 3D or VRML to run this?
The Atlas of Nearby Stars: Projects in Virtual Astronomy does not use either Java 3d or VRML
How can I clear the parallax measurement tool?
To reset the parallax measurement tool in parallax measurement or parallax with timer mode, simply reset any of the GUI pulldown menus.
Can I add stars to the database?
Stars are added to the database by adding in parameter tags in the HTML file that invokes the Applet. In particular, the parameter STAR holds the number of entries. Each entry contains columns in the order shown in Appendix 4 of Universe by Kaufmann and Freedman (1999). Each field is delimited by the colon character. Parameters for each entry are of the form STARN
Why don't I see any difference when I change my field of view in parallel measurement mode?
In parallel mode, all view plane projections are parallel by definition. Changing the field of view changes the distance to the view plane, but because all projections are parallel, this has no effect on the display.
What's that green circle I see in parallel and perspective projection modes?
The green circle is a bulls-eye designed to make faint target stars easier to spot.
Why don't I see the stars of the Southern Cross in parallel or perspective projection modes?
Only stars less than 13 light years are included. The stars of the Southern Cross (Crux) are included to provide a degree of realism when working with the region of sky near Alpha and Beta Centauri in the southern sky.
Why bother having both parallax measurement and parallax timer modes?
Some people find the passage of time easier to comprehend when presented with a sequence of images.
When I compare perspective and parallel projection modes, why are the stars different sizes?
Parallel mode shows stars using the absolute magnitude for each star. Perspective mode shows the stars using the apparent magnitude given the position in deep space determined from the specified field of view.
Parallax with timer mode tells me the month. What is the day and year?
The clock timer icon is provided to denote the passing of a generic month. Although months of the year are used, they have no relationship to any particular month.
Why can't I change the field of view in HR-DIAGRAM mode?
When in HR Diagram mode, the pulldown menu to change the field of view is inactivated. On Microsoft Internet Explorer, it is grey and inactive. On Netscape, it is the normal colour but can't be activated
